Rockfish Charters in Homer, Alaska

Bottom fishing charters targeting rockfish, yelloweye, and black bass in Homer, Alaska's deep Kachemak Bay waters.

Rockfish are one of Alaska's most underrated sport fish. Yelloweye rockfish — sometimes called 'red snapper' — are stunning bright orange fish with enormous eyes, capable of living over 100 years. Black rockfish and quillback rockfish are found in shallower water and bite aggressively. On most Homer combo trips, rockfish are a target species alongside halibut. Dedicated rockfish trips produce incredible numbers and great table fare.

What you need to know

  • Yelloweye rockfish must be released carefully — they're brought up from pressure depth and need a descender device to return safely.
  • Black rockfish can be found on surface schools and are one of the most exciting rock fishing experiences — they attack surface lures.
  • Rockfish are almost always a bonus catch on halibut trips, making combo trips excellent value.
  • Black rockfish school aggressively and provide constant bite action — you can keep 3 rockfish total per day (limit 1 non-pelagic like yelloweye). Great species for catch-and-release action beyond your limit.
  • Homer's Kachemak Bay has some of the most productive rocky structure in Alaska for bottom fishing.
