About lingcod charters in Homer, Alaska

Lingcod are Alaska's most underestimated game fish. These prehistoric-looking predators ambush prey with massive mouths, and a 30-40 lb lingcod putting up a fight near the surface is a completely different experience from halibut. They're also fantastic eating — firm, white, mild meat that many chefs consider the best of any Alaska species. In 2026, the Cook Inlet lingcod season opens July 1 and runs through December 31, with a limit of 1 per day (minimum 35 inches).

What you need to know

  • Lingcod are almost always caught while targeting halibut or rockfish — most operators include them on combo trips when the season is open.
  • They're aggressive and will eat almost anything, including whole rockfish. Sometimes a big lingcod will grab your rockfish on the way up.
  • The July 1 season opening coincides with peak silver salmon runs — July combo trips can put halibut, silvers, rockfish, and lingcod on the deck in a single day.
  • 40+ lb lingcod are considered trophy fish — Ocean Hunter Charters holds multiple IGFA line-class world records for lingcod caught in Homer waters.
  • Lingcod meat turns bright white when cooked and holds up well to almost any preparation — highly prized by restaurants and considered some of the best table fare in Alaska.
