Kachemak Charters is a family-run operation helmed by Captain Jim, who has been piloting the waters of Cook Inlet since 1985 and earned his 100-ton Masters License in 1990 after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard — including a stint stationed right in Homer aboard the USCG Cutter Sedge. Jim and his wife Denise run small-group halibut charters aboard the Stella, departing Homer Small Boat Harbor between 6:00 and 7:30 am for 8–10 hour trips across Kachemak Bay, Cook Inlet, the Gulf of Alaska, the Barren Islands, and the Kodiak Archipelago. Guests fish with premium Avet reels and Lamiglas/Shimano rods using Spectra super lines, with all bait and tackle provided, and the deckhand has fish cleaned and ready for the processor by the time the boat hits the dock.
